March 2018
FIRST SEMINAR "BEHAVIORAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS – GREATER UNDERSTANDING LEADS TO HEALTHIER OUTCOMES" HELD FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL PEDAGOGUES OF HERCEGOVINA-NERETVA CANTON
To empower schools through educational programs aimed at prevention and reduction of all forms of peer- and gender-based violence in schools and beyond is the primary focus of all program activities organized for the second year by TPO Foundation in cooperation with three canton ministries of education as part of the project "Peer- and gender-based violence". In Mostar, on March 26, 2018, we started a new cycle of seminars for pedagogues entitled "Behavioral and emotional disorders of children and adolescents – greater understanding leads to healthier outcomes", which is intended to empower staff at schools in their work with children when dealing with students' behavioral disorders. Pedagogues and psychologists from 10 partner schools in HNC, associates from the Mostar Educational Institute, Pedagogy Institute, SOS Children's Village and a representative from the HNC Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport participated in a one-day seminar led by Nermina Kravic, M.D., a neuropsychiatrist subspecialized in child and adolescent psychiatry.
In the first part of the seminar entitled "Behavioral and emotional disorders of children and adolescents – greater understanding leads to healthier outcomes", participants shared their practical experiences in everyday situations while working with children. They said that lack of awareness and education of teaching staff leads to behavioral and emotional disorders of children.
Talking about consistency in upbringing, the participants emphasized that it can reflect positively as well as negatively on a child's personality development.
It often happens that there is one-on-one work with children because of different structures of children who have different needs. Teachers should be reminded that – apart from conducting class – preparing a series of group- and individual-work activities for children also belongs to their profession. It is also extremely important to work with parents, because some parents refuse to accept the fact that their child has a problem, and that it is necessary to classify the child, which would facilitate teachers' work with those children. After the seminar in Mostar, the same seminars are to take place in Vitez and Sarajevo, and pedagogues and psychologists will afterwards continue to progress with their colleagues in this area with the mentorship from the TPO team, and they will include parents of students from all partner schools into all program activities.
